Fav?
Why the Canucks No Doubt!!!!
That Centre Ice package is SOOOOOO awesome!!! -
I only wish I could get it but here in Canada where I live, except its only carried on the Bell network here, Im unable to afford to get the Bell reciever which is ridiculously expensive!!
Its one way to burn out on hockey with over 1000 games a year! If that was only possible for a Canadian , for an Americn mabye - keep us posted.
Im glad your boy likes it - it sure is a blast to see a live game alright!
Cheers
Well, I'd say your hooked Buddy

Go Blues Go
Yeah and my wife who has been married to this non sports guy (me) for over ten years, thinks I've lost my mind I'm sure. She is however a great woman and doesn't bust my chops... I've often thought I married way above my pay grade.

Well my boy is taking a liking to the Atlanta Thrashers. And as said I'm kind of taking a shine to Detroit. All this leads to a few question. I'm assuming that East conference teams don't play west conference teams at least until the end of the season.. Right?

With that said can some one outline the how the playoffs work.

Sure Ron.

Well to start with, East and West teams do meet during the regular season, but not all East teams will play all West teams and visa versa.

I think Each East or West team plays the other side about 8 games, and since there are 16 teams per conference, you can do the math.

Now each conference (that's the East West designation) has 3 different divisions. In the West you have the Central, Northwest and Pacific (Why Dallas is in the Pacific I'll never know, I guess they have to fit some where). And each team in their respective division plays each other team in that division 8 times. Than 4 times for the other divisions.

The math for the regular season gets really really crazy

Now for the playoffs.

Each Conference will have 8 teams in the playoffs, so 8 teams make it, 8 teams don't.

The top team in each division gets one of the top 3 spots, this is based on points total at the end of the season.

The remaining 5 spots go to the teams with the highest points. So, say the wings finish second in their division with 95 points and Vancouver finishes first in their Division with 94 points, Vancouver will most likly take 3rd spot and the wings will take 4th.

You getting this mess yet (personally I think baseball is harder to follow once you get near the playoffs)

So, the 1st plays the 8th
2nd plays the 7th
3rd plays the 6th
4th plays the 5th.

This is the first round, best of 7 games, first team to win 4 advances to the next round.

Second round is all based on where you started.

Say in the first round 8th won and 1st is out. and 2nd won. Now 8th plays 2nd etc... with the other teams remaining.

This is the second round.

Wait this is crazy......

Maybe this will help too

I get how they choose the initial 8 teams in each conference. Then there seems to be a standard as to who plays who in the first round. As to who plays who in the second round I don't get it but that's ok ( actually I think I do now... if 8, 7, 3 and 5 win, then 8 plays 3 and 7 plays 5) I can watch and try to make some sense of it as we move along through the play offs.

First round is best of seven games. What about second and third round. Then finally what about the cup? one game or...?

BTW thnx for the detailed response. Great diagram!

As far as how often the teams in one division play the teams from the other divisions, it seems you could have a team like the Ducks that look really good get one of the top three spots in their conference then get trounced in the play offs just because the other teams in their division are weak which would allow them to look good in regular season play. That make since?

I'm probably missing something but if that's the case then it seems the season could be really exciting and perhaps a bit unpredictable all the way to the end.

You got it. 3 & 5 would have home advantage though.

The best of 7 if it goes to 7 goes 2 home, 2 away, 1,1,1 so you can see that the first 2 games can be crutial if you play well at home.

All rounds are best of 7 right through, soooooo come april, there can still be a lot of Hockey.

Heck when we went down to Disneyland last June, me and my buddies watched game 3 Edmonton and Carolina at the ESPN sports zone restaurant, It can go a little long some times, 9 months is a lot of hockey.

It is strange the schedule, the league is really trying to create rivalries between teams who are close to one another. The thing with The Ducks though is that they are really that skilled and have really gelled as a team. I suspect that they will go all the way this year. But you never know what can happen, one injury and they could roll over and play dead.

A lot of the schedule is "business" driven. Keep travel costs down, Keep superstars in localized high volume markets...
Watch what happens if Pittsburg actually does move to Seattle, There would immediatly be a schedule change to make sure Crosby plays in the east as much as possible.

Yes Ronn and if the play-offs games all go in 7, we'd have hockey at the end of june!

Rod, looking forward to a rematch where we'll wipe your team down!
